Last year (2003) during the Winter Quarter the couches that were recessed in the walls were deemed fire hazards and were removed. Removed, not because people would trip on them (recessed into the wall), but because they material wasn't "fire guarded." (As opposed to the walls, rugs, and basically everything else in our own rooms)

Taking initiative Ben and Kristin made a petition to bring back the couches into the now empty and useless lounges of Sproul. But alas, petitions did nothing and our lounge remains Couchless!
